The Search Institute and the Developmental Relationships Framework

Through the first few months of our monthly email blasts, we will be exploring the Search Institute’s Developmental Relationships Model. Check out this video for a brief overview of the model!

The idea is this: In order to thrive, youth need to have strong relationships with the adults in their lives. This conclusion was the outcome of years of research done by the Search Institute showing that strong relationships with adults was one of the strongest predictors of success among youth.

To help more adults to cultivate these meaningful relationships, the Search Institute created the Developmental Relationship Framework. The Framework highlights five key elements that are important to a Developmental Relationship:

  1. Express Care: Show me that I matter to you.

  2. Challenge Growth: Push me to keep getting better.

  3. Provide Support: Help me complete tasks and achieve goals.

  4. Share Power: Treat me with respect and give me a say.

  5. Expand Possibilities: Connect me with people and places that broaden my world.

For more information about the Developmental Relationships Framework, we encourage you to visit the Search Institute’s website. Additionally, you can find some of the Search Institute’s materials on our Helpful Links and Materials page.
